NHS England and the Mary Seacole Trust (MST) have joined forces to launch a major recruitment and development project aimed at raising the profile of internationally educated nurses and midwives.
The project entitled ‘Mary Seacole and Me Storytellers’ wants to hear from nurses and midwives who have come to the UK from abroad to work. Those chosen to take part will help to promote the contribution that overseas staff make to the healthcare system and communities in the UK.
MST Chair Trevor Sterling said: “Mary Seacole was an international nurse who overcame incredible challenges to help those in need and we want to hear from nurses and midwives who have a parallel story to tell as Modern Day Marys”.
The objective is to build a diverse network of ‘Mary Seacole and Me Storytellers’ who will deliver talks on behalf of MST to the community through schools, hospitals and organisations, telling not only Mary’s story but their own.
The programme will help the successful applicants progress in their careers by developing their confidence, presentation and public speaking skills.
The programme is open to nurses and midwives in the NHS and private sectors on bands 5-7 who have trained outside of the UK, and who have an interesting story to tell about their experiences, particularly any challenges they have faced.
Applicants need to be on the NMC register, to be nominated by a mentor with approval from their line manager, and be sure that they can fulfil the commitments of the programme, including attendance at the induction day on Thursday 4 April 2024 in Richmond, London; and the celebration event on Wednesday 9 October 2024 in Richmond, London.
The closing date for applications is 17 March 2024.
