Trevor Sterling, Chair of the Mary Seacole Trust has presented the Jamaican High Commissioner Alexander Williams with the new special edition £5 coin celebrating the ‘life and adventures’ of the Victorian heroine and Jamaican/Scottish nurse Mary Seacole.
The Royal Mint has released the uncirculated coin, the first dedicated to Mary, as part of its collection in honour of iconic British women. It describes the coin as ‘Celebrating the adventurous life of nurse and entrepreneur Mary Seacole.’
The presentation at the Jamaican High Commission in London further strengthens ties between the Mary Seacole Trust and the country where Mary grew up, before coming to England and then paying for her passage to the Crimea where she took care of soldiers on and off the battlefield.
Trevor Sterling said: “The coin is not just a symbol of Mary but is recognition of the contributions diverse communities make and have made to British society through the years. It is an important part of the Mary Seacole legacy beyond her historic statue.
“The ties with our colleagues in Jamaica are increasingly important to the Trust and we wanted to ensure that the people of Jamaica can be proud that Mary has now been recognised by the Royal Mint.”
