On 22nd June 1948 the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, bringing the first wave of immigrants from the Caribbean to support the reconstruction of post war Britain.
Last year in 2018, the first-ever Windrush Day marked the 70th anniversary of the landing, for the purpose of “encouraging communities across the country to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants.” Backed by government funding, the day features a large variety of activities, including dance performances, exhibitions, and debates.
This year, across London and the UK, hundreds of events are taking place on and around Windrush Day on Saturday 22nd June 2019. Click here to see what’s going on around London.
MST Trustee, Karen Bonner, will be speaking at St Thomas’ Hospital Chapel on Friday 21st June 2019, where a Thanksgiving service is being held to commemorate the Windrush Legacy. Karen will be speaking alongside Janet Daby MP and the Rt. Hon. David Lammy MP.
